CONTROVERSIAL ADVERTISEMENTS

Manuel Angel Alonso Coto

There have always been ads that have arisen general protest or at least caused certain groups claims. But lately this have been happening too often.

Let's think for instance of the last advertising campaign from Dolce & Gabanna… First claims came from Spain’s Instituto Español de la Mujer causing a major scandal in general media that after spreading across Europe forced the Italian fashion company to apologise and retire the campaign… A groups of guys appear to be harashing a pretty girl dressed in D&G clothes… Jus when domestic violence is getting to really frightening levels in Spain…

Another example is the TV ad La Sexta (the only Spanish TV channel broadcasting La Liga football matches for free) has had just to retire: they were promoting the derby of the year in Spain (Real Madrid vs. Barcelona) using the claim “not a good moment to die” and a script in which a dead in a crash accident got resurrected in order to not lose the match… Spanish Authorities who are spending millions of euros in order to prevent car accidents banned the ad…

In both cases everyone was talking of the ads or looking for them in Internet if they had already been retired…

Too strict criteria in todays’s too politically correct world or brands taking advantage of releasing polemic ads in order to get deeper impact? What do you think?

Best regards.

I do not think it is intentional. Simply some art directors do no show the sesibility they should...
